Did you know people who live in different parts ofChinahave different habits and preferences? For example, people from southernChinaprefer to eat vegetables, while people from northChinalike to eat meat. According to a new study in a journal, gene variations (变异) might be responsible for these differences. Researchers fromChina’s BGI collected genetic information from 141,431 Chinese women, who came from 31 provinces and consisted of 36 ethnic minority groups.
They found that natural selection has played an important role in the ways that people living in different regions of China have developed, affecting their food preferences, immunities (免疫力) to illness and physical features.
A variation of the gene FADS2 is more commonly found in northern people. It helps people metabolize (新陈代谢) fatty acids, which suggests a diet that is rich in flesh. This is due to climate differences.Northern Chinais at a higher latitude. This weather is difficult to grow vegetables in. Therefore, northerners tend to eat more meat.
The study also found differences in the immune systems of both groups. Most people in southernChinacarry the gene CR1, which protects against malaria. Malaria was once quite common in southernChina. In order to survive, the genes of people in the south evolved to fight against this disease. However, people in the south are also more sensitive to certain illnesses, as they lack the genes to stop them.
Genes can also cause physical differences between northerners and southerners. Most northerners have the ABCC11 gene, which causes dry earwax, less body smell and fewer sweats. These physical differences are also more beneficial to living in cold environments. Southerners are less likely to have this gene, as it did not develop in their population.
4. What did the new study focus on? A. Regions. B. Eating habits.
C. Gene variations. D. Ethnic minority groups. 5. What is the main function of the gene FADS2? A. It helps store fat. B. It helps digest meat. C. It helps gain weight. D. It helps treat an illness. 6. According to the study, most northerners ________.
A. sweat less frequently B. are immune to malaria
C. prefer vegetables to meat D. are more sensitive to climates 7. How many differences did the study find related to genes?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.

Last year, 138,000San Franciscoresidents used Airbnb, a popular app designed to connect home renters and travelers. It’s a striking number for a city with a population of about 850,000, and it was enough for Airbnb to win a major victory in local elections, asSan Franciscovoters struck down a debatable rule that would have placed time restrictions and other regulations on short-term rental services.
The company fiercely opposed the measure, Proposition F, with a nearly $10 million advertising campaign. It also contacted its San Franciscan users with messages urging them to vote against Proposition F.
Most people think of Airbnb as a kind of couch-surfing app. The service works for one-night stays on road trips and longer stays in cities, and it often has more competitive pricing than hotels. It’s a textbook example of the “sharing economy”, but not everyone is a fan.
The app has had unintended consequences inSan Francisco. As the San Francisco Chronicle reported last year, a significant amount of renting on Airbnb is not in line with the company’s image: middle-class families putting up a spare room to help make ends meet. Some users have taken advantage of the service, using it to turn their multiple properties into vacation rentals or even full-time rentals. Backers of Proposition F argued that this trend takes spaces off the conventional, better-regulated housing market and contributes to rising costs.
“The fact is, widespread abuse of short-term rentals is taking much needed housing off the market and harming our neighborhoods,” said ShareBetter SF, a group that supported Proposition F. Hotel unions have protested the company’s practices inSan Franciscoand other cities, saying that it creates an illegal hotel system.
San Franciscois in the middle of a long-term, deeply rooted housing crisis that has seen the cost of living explode. Actually, explode is a generous term. The average monthly rent for an apartment is around $4, 000. Located on a narrow outcropping of land overlooking the bay,San Franciscosimply doesn’t have enough space to
accommodate the massive inflow of young, high-salaried tech employees flocking toSilicon Valley.
As the Los Angeles Times reported, someSan Franciscoresidents supported the measure simply because it seemed like a way to check a big corporation. Opponents of Proposition F countered that the housing crisis runs much deeper, and that passing the rule would have discouraged a popular service while doing little to solve the city’s existing problems.
8. The intention of Proposition F is to ________.
A. place time limits in local election. B. set limits on short-term rental. C. strike down a controversial rule. D. urge users to vote against Airbnb. 9. What is the negative consequence of Airbnb onSan Francisco? A. It shrinks the living space of middle-class families. B. Users are taken advantage of by the service financially. C. It makes the house market more competitive. D. It indirectly leads to high house rental price.
10. The housing crisis inSan Franciscoresults from ________.
A. explosion of the living cost B. its geographic characteristics C. generosity of local enterprises D. inflow of migrant population 11. Theauthor’s attitude toward Proposition F is ________. A. objective B. supportive C. negative D. indifferent
D
“We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds... Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth.” These are the words of the famous scientist Stephen Hawking, spoken at a science festival inNorwayin 2017, a year before his death.
Hawking was not alone in this view. Many experts feel that the only way for humanity to last far into the future is to colonize other planets. That way, if an asteroid, a terrible disease, nuclear war, or some other disaster strikes Earth, civilization as we know it would still have a chance. Mars is one of the most tempting destinations. NASA, theUnited Arab Emirates, the private company SpaceX, and the organization Mars One all have plans to send humans there. “Either we spread Earth to other planets, or we risk going extinct, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said at a conference in 2013.
But not everyone agrees that colonizing Mars or any other planet is such a great plan. The most common
argument against going is that it’s just too expensive or dangerous. It will take huge amounts of money and other resources just to get people there, let alone set up a place for them to live. It’s not even clear if humans could survive on Mars. One of the biggest dangers there is deadly radiation that bombards the planet.
Maybe all the time and money people would pour into a Mars mission would be better spent on more urgent projects here on Earth, like dealing with poverty or climate change. Some experts argue that handling a problem like an asteroid strike or disease outbreak while staying here on Earth would be much easier and less expensive than surviving on a new planet.
In addition, moving to a new planet could harm or destroy anything that already lives there. Mars seems uninhabited, but it could possibly host microbial life. Human visitors may destroy this life or permanently change or damage the Martian environment. Some feel that’s too much of a risk to take.
What do you think? Should humans colonize outer space or stay home? 12. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Many experts insist that humans should take the risk. B. Mars is the most attractive destinations for human beings.
C. Hawking firmly believes the only way to save humans is moving to Mars. D. All the other experts don’t agree with Hawking’s idea.
13. Why do some experts disagree with the plan to colonize Mars? A. It will cost much more money to settle on Mars than on Earth. B. It is too long a distance from the Earth to the Mars. C. Human visitors will bring diseases to Martian environment. D. The deadly radiation that bombards the planet is the biggest danger. 14. What’s the writing purpose of the passage?
A. To raise people’s awareness of protecting the environment. B. To present different opinions on whether to move to the Mars. C. To arouse readers’ reflection on whether to colonize outer space. D. To inspire people to deal with the environmental problems. 15. In which section of a magazine is the passage most likely from?
A. Fiction. B. Current affairs. C. Social Studies. D. Science. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Don't judge a book by its cover. We have heard that advice over and over again. And it makes sense. Why should we judge someone who is overweight simply by how they look? It has nothing to do with them as a person, and it says nothing about all they have achieved in life.
___16___We should not judge them as healthy simply because they are thin.
We care so much about weight that we think those who succeed in keeping a \"healthy weight\" must be healthy.
Many studies have shown that being overweight increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and even death.___17___Some studies just look at pounds. Some use body mass index(BMI) which includes both height and weight measurements. But neither one says anything about overall health for sure.
In some studies, a person's fitness has been shown to be more important than overall weight.
That means those at \"normal\" weight, but below average fitness could be at higher risk than fitter and heavier people.___18___
If you are thin and want to know if your health may be at risk, whole body MRIs (磁共振成像)can tell you if you are a TOFI (thin on the outside, fat on the inside). This is thought to increase your health risk even if you have a perfect body weight.___19___Rather, creating and keeping healthy lifestyle habits should be the goal.
Start nowand you will be on your way to improving your overall health.___20___But even if it doesn't, rest assured you are still improving your health and your life. A.The same holds true for thin people. B.Weight loss will usually naturally follow. C.The article mainly talks about people in Australia. D.So weight loss should not be what we always dream of. E.How many times do you say, \"She looks great! Nice and thin!\"? F.But the problem lies with how we can know we are overweight. G.So there is no such thing as healthy weight, only healthy lifestyles.

I saw streets just as it had been, with stepping stones along the road so you did not have to step in the mud on rainy days! I saw several house which were decorated
